MCFC Winter Co-op
Eat Local Winter Food Eat by the seasons. Years ago food didn’t travel so far. People ate the food that was grown in their native locale, eating according to seasonal and climatic influences.
There are many wonderful reasons to eat local. Fresh food, just picked, supporting local farmers and communities, reducing fossil fuel, supporting fair market value of food…
But is it possible in the winter on the North East Coast? In the winter, much of the land on the North East coast slows down to rest. Not much can grow in frozen ground. But cold storage techniques developed long ago are still effective in storing hard produce harvested in the fall. And, thank goodness the sun still shines, although for fewer hours, it can be harnessed to grow greens in an insulated greenhouse.
Eat by your region. Heard of the 100 mile diet? A couple challenged themselves to eat with in a 100 mile radius. Not everyone needs to eat within 100 miles - 300-500 miles is within an accepted local region for most people committed to eating locally, but the focus is on making choices.
Eat seasonal and in your region with MCFC MCFC works with local farmers throughout the winter to receive cold storage fruit and vegetables and local greenhouses to receive fresh greens and herbs during the winter.
How far is the food for MCFC food coming from? Havenwood Farm is about 40 miles from Montclair, Hepworth Farm is about 70 miles, Arc Greenhouses is 125 miles and Honey Gardens is 300 miles away.
We also buy select items from further afield through a certified organic distributor who supports small farms. We love our NYS apples and also love our eco-Bananas from Ecuador.
Montclair Community Food Co-operative Winter Co-op In the winter months Montclair Community Food Co-op continues its work with local farmers supplementing with produce from our organic distributor, Albert’s Organics.
Here's how the co-op works: We bulk-buy our produce from individual local organic farmers and from an organic food distributor. Deliveries will be made in Montclair every other week and pick up will be between the hours of 2 pm and 8 pm Mondays starting in December.
Our Full Family Share contains a variety of more than 15 different fruits and vegetables each week, dependant on seasonal availability and rotation. Every delivery has two dozen eggs, apples, bananas, a minimum of two or more fruits, two cooking greens, two salad greens, a root vegetable, an onion or garlic, and an herb and a special item.
Local items include cold storage hard fruits and vegetables (such as apples, squash, root vegetables and cabbage), greenhouse grown baby greens, barn grown mushrooms, hot house tomatoes, and bean and seed sprouts. The cost is $50 a delivery for Family Size Box $30 for Single size box. Plus a once a year fee of $15 that pays for administrative fees and for two plastic reusable boxes. Prepay for one session of four deliveries at a time for $200. We require payment in advance. Members must fill out a form to join.
